Selecting a financial planner involves several factors
When you select a financial planner, consider the following factors before making your decision.
- Proper licensing and registrations — Select an individual who is properly licensed to do business in your state of residence.
- Experience, reputation — Find a planner who has experience working with others who are in situations similar to yours. Look for someone who has a good reputation and represents a respectable organization.
- Product familiarity — Identify a planner who is familiar with a wide range of products and services that can be used to help you accomplish your financial goals.
- Method of payment — Some financial planners are paid commissions on the products they sell. Others receive flat or hourly fees for their services and still others can be paid through a combination of fees and commissions. You must decide which of these payment arrangements suits you best.
- Communication — Look for a planner who is willing and able to explain planning strategies and possible solutions and financial products. Good planners also will maintain ongoing contact with you — providing regular reports on the status of your accounts, helping you understand the content of the reports and responding to your questions and concerns.
